Márcio Passos de Albuquerque (born on September 6, 1978), known as Emerson Sheik or just Emerson, is a former professional footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was usually at the front of the team, trying to score goals. Emerson was born in Brazil. He later played for the national team of Qatar, which is how he got his cool nickname "Sheik"!

Emerson Sheik's Football Journey

Starting His Career

Emerson Sheik was born in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil. When he was a teenager, he showed a lot of promise in football. He trained in the youth system of São Paulo FC, a famous Brazilian club. He started playing for their main team in 1998.

Playing in Japan

In 2000, Emerson Sheik moved to Japan. He joined Consadole Sapporo, a team in the second division. He was an amazing goal scorer there, scoring 31 goals in just 34 games!

After that, he moved to another second division team, Kawasaki Frontale. He kept scoring lots of goals, with 19 goals in 18 league games. In 2001, he moved up to the first division to play for Urawa Reds. He continued to be a top scorer, netting 71 goals in 100 games for the Reds. He even won awards like the top scorer in the J1 League and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2004 J1 League.

Time in Qatar and France

In 2005, Emerson Sheik joined the Qatari team Al-Sadd. He moved there for a transfer fee of 8 million US dollars.

Later, on August 25, 2007, he signed a three-year contract with a French team called Stade Rennais FC. However, he didn't play much for Rennes. His old team, Al-Sadd, was not doing well, and their fans really wanted him back. So, in December 2007, Emerson returned to Al-Sadd.

Back to Brazil

On March 20, 2009, Emerson signed a one-year deal with Flamengo, a team he loved since he was a child. He was a great scorer for them. In the 2009 season, he played alongside another famous player, Adriano. They formed one of the best attacking duos in the league!

In September 2009, he signed a two-year deal with Al Ain FC in the United Arab Emirates.

On June 16, 2010, Emerson signed with Fluminense. On December 5, 2010, he scored the winning goal that helped Fluminense win the Brasileirão Série A title. This meant he became a Brazilian champion two years in a row!

Success with Corinthians

On May 18, 2011, Emerson Sheik joined Corinthians. On December 4, 2011, he won his third Brazilian championship in a row with Corinthians. This made him the first player ever to win three straight Brazilian championships with three different teams!

On July 4, 2012, Emerson scored two important goals in the second match of the 2012 Copa Libertadores Finals. This helped Corinthians win their first ever Copa Libertadores title, which is a huge South American club competition. Later that year, on December 16, 2012, he was part of the Corinthians team that won the FIFA World Club Championship. They beat the famous English team Chelsea 1-0.

Emerson Sheik returned to Corinthians in 2015. He played many games, including in the 2015 Copa Libertadores.

Playing for Botafogo

In April 2014, Emerson was loaned to Botafogo. This was his third club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He wore the number seven shirt, which was famously used by Botafogo's biggest idol, Garrincha.

International Career

Emerson Sheik played for the Brazil U-20 team in 1999.

Later, he was offered Qatari citizenship by his club, Al-Sadd. This was so the team could have another foreign player in their lineup. He accepted and became a Qatari citizen in 2008. He made his first international appearance for the Qatar national team on March 4, 2008, in a friendly match against Bahrain. He also played in another friendly and a World Cup qualifying match for Qatar.

However, in April 2008, it was found that Emerson Sheik had already played for Brazil's under-20 team. This meant he was not allowed to play for the Qatari national team according to FIFA rules. FIFA confirmed this rule breach, and Emerson stopped playing for Qatar.
