Emiel van Lennep's Life Story

Early Life and Education

Emiel van Lennep was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on January 20, 1915. His parents were Louis Henri van Lennep and Catharina Hildegonda Enschede.

He went to the Municipal University of Amsterdam. There, he studied law for five years, from 1932 to 1937.

A Career in Finance and Diplomacy

After finishing his studies, Emiel van Lennep began an important career in government. From 1951 to 1969, he was the top official at the Dutch Ministry of Finance. This role meant he was in charge of managing the country's money matters.

In 1969, he took on an even bigger role. He became the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The OECD is an international group where many countries work together to improve their economies and societies. He led the OECD until 1984.

Leading the OECD

During his time as Secretary-General, Emiel van Lennep made the OECD much stronger. He helped it become a better place for countries to cooperate and solve economic problems together. He was very good at bringing different nations to the table.

Even though he was very successful, Emiel van Lennep never wanted to be a politician in the Netherlands. He was asked several times to join the Dutch government in the 1970s, but he preferred to stay out of politics.

Later Years and Recognition

After his long career at the OECD, Emiel van Lennep continued to serve his country. In 1986, he was given the special title of Minister of State. This meant he was a trusted advisor to the Dutch government. He held this important position until he passed away.

Emiel van Lennep was married to Alexa Labberton. They had two sons and two daughters.

In 1990, he received a special honor called the Four Freedoms Award. He won the award in the category of "freedom from want." This award recognized his efforts to help people have a better standard of living.

Emiel van Lennep died on October 2, 1996, at the age of 81.
