Emil Szymon Młynarski (born July 18, 1870 – died April 5, 1935) was a very talented Polish musician. He was a great conductor, a skilled violinist, and a creative composer. He also taught music to many students.

A Life in Music

Emil Młynarski was born in a place called Kibarty. This town was part of the Russian Empire back then. Today, it is in Lithuania. He learned to play the violin from a famous teacher named Leopold Auer. He also studied how to compose music with Anatoly Lyadov and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Młynarski helped start the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. He was its first conductor. Later, he became the main conductor for the Scottish Orchestra in Glasgow, Scotland. He led this orchestra from 1910 to 1916. He also conducted the very first performance of Karol Szymanowski's opera called King Roger.

Emil Młynarski wrote many musical pieces. One of his important works is a symphony (a long piece for orchestra) called Polonia. He dedicated this symphony to his homeland, Poland. He also wrote two concertos for violin. A concerto is a piece where a solo instrument, like a violin, plays with an orchestra. His second violin concerto has been recorded by famous violinists like Konstanty Kulka and Nigel Kennedy.

Emil Młynarski passed away in Warsaw when he was 64 years old. Many of his family members also became famous. His daughter Aniela, also known as Nela, married the well-known pianist Arthur Rubinstein. This makes Emil Młynarski the grandfather of John Rubinstein, an American actor. He is also related to the famous Polish poet and singer Wojciech Młynarski.

Młynarski was also a wonderful teacher. Some of his students became very important musicians themselves. One of his students, Pyotr Stolyarsky, later taught the legendary violinist David Oistrakh. Other students included Paul Kochanski and Paul Kletzki.

He wrote two important violin concertos. The first was in D minor, written around 1897. The second, in D major, was composed around 1916. These show his skill in writing for the violin.

Młynarski also wrote for the stage. He worked on a few operas, though some were not finished. These included Ligia and In vino veritas. He completed the opera Summer Night in 1913. His Symphony in F major, "Polonia" (1910) is a well-known orchestral work. He also wrote songs for voice and piano, and pieces for full orchestra like Solemn Fanfares.
