Emily Thorn Vanderbilt (born January 31, 1852 – died July 28, 1946) was an American woman known for her generous giving. She was a member of the very famous Vanderbilt family. Emily helped create the Sloane Hospital for Women in New York in 1888. She gave over $1,000,000 to help start it.

Early Life of Emily Vanderbilt

Emily Thorn Vanderbilt was born in 1852. She was the fifth child of William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam. Her grandfather was Cornelius Vanderbilt. He was a very important and wealthy businessman.

Emily's Philanthropy and Projects

Emily Vanderbilt was a great helper of many causes. She gave a lot of money to start the Sloane Hospital for Women. This hospital opened in New York with her gift of over $1,000,000. Today, this hospital is part of NewYork-Presbyterian / Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. It is still helping people.

In 1885, Emily and her first husband, William Douglas Sloane, built a huge house. It was called Elm Court. This large home was in Lenox, Massachusetts. It was built in a special style called 'shingle-style'.

Emily's Personal Life

In 1872, when Emily was twenty years old, she married William Douglas Sloane. William was part of a family that owned a carpet company. Emily and William had five children together. They had three daughters and two sons.

  • Emily Vanderbilt Sloane (1874–1970)
  • Lila Vanderbilt Sloane (1878–1934)
  • William Douglas Sloane (1883–1884)

The family lived in a grand home in New York City. It was called the Vanderbilt Triple Palace on Fifth Avenue.

After William Sloane passed away, Emily married again in 1920. Her second husband was Henry White. He was an American Ambassador to France and Italy. He also signed an important peace agreement called the Treaty of Versailles.

Emily Thorn Vanderbilt died on July 28, 1946. She passed away in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Emily's Grandchildren

Emily Thorn Vanderbilt Sloane White had many grandchildren. Some of them became well-known. Her granddaughter, Adele Hammond, was the grandmother of actor Timothy Olyphant. Another granddaughter, Alice Frances Hammond, married the famous jazz musician Benny Goodman. Her grandson, John Henry Hammond II, was a talent scout who helped many musicians.
