Early Life and Education
Emlen Franklin was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on April 7, 1827. He was the youngest son of Judge Walter Franklin.
He went to Yale College in 1845 and finished his studies there in 1847. After college, he studied law with Nathaniel Ellmaker in Lancaster. He became a lawyer in May 1850.
Legal and Political Career
After becoming a lawyer, Emlen Franklin started his own law practice in Lancaster. He quickly became involved in politics.
In 1854, he was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This is where laws are made for the state of Pennsylvania. He served one term but decided not to run for re-election.
From 1859 to 1862, Franklin worked as the District Attorney for Lancaster County. A District Attorney is a lawyer who works for the government. Their job is to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes.
Military Service in the Civil War
When the American Civil War began, Emlen Franklin joined the army. He first volunteered with a local militia company as a Captain.
In 1862, he helped create the 122nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was chosen to be the Colonel, which is a high-ranking officer. He led this regiment for nine months.
During this time, Colonel Franklin and his regiment fought in two major battles. These were the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Chancellorsville. These were very important and difficult battles during the Civil War.
He returned home in May 1863. Just a month later, General Robert E. Lee's army invaded Pennsylvania. Franklin quickly raised another group of militia soldiers. He commanded one of the brigades, which is a large group of soldiers, during this campaign.
Later Life and Legacy
After his military service, Colonel Franklin went back to being a lawyer. In the fall of 1863, he was elected as the Register of Wills for Lancaster County. He held this position for three years.
His health was affected by his time serving in the army. Emlen Franklin passed away in Lancaster on June 19, 1891. He was 64 years old.
He was married to a daughter of Michael Withers. She outlived him, along with their two sons and one daughter.
