Emma Jung (born Emma Marie Rauschenbach, March 30, 1882 – November 27, 1955) was a Swiss analyst and author. She was married to Carl Jung, a very famous psychiatrist and the founder of analytical psychology. Emma helped him a lot with his work and even helped pay for his studies. They had five children together. She was like an "intellectual editor" for him, helping with his ideas throughout her life. After she passed away, Carl Jung lovingly described her as "a Queen."
Emma Jung's Early Life
Emma Rauschenbach grew up in a very rich family. Her father, Johannes Rauschenbach, owned a big company called IWC Schaffhausen. This company made expensive and famous watches. When Emma got married, she was one of the two richest young women in all of Switzerland.
Her Family and Marriage
Emma Rauschenbach first met Carl Jung in 1896 when she was still a schoolgirl. They met through a friend of Carl's mother. Carl Jung later said that he knew right away that Emma would be his wife. They got married seven years later, on February 14, 1903. Emma and Carl had five children: four daughters named Agathe, Gret, Marianne, and Helene, and one son named Franz Karl.
When Emma's father died in 1905, Emma and her sister, along with their husbands, became owners of IWC Schaffhausen. This watch company was very successful. Even though Emma's brother-in-law managed most of the business, the Jungs still owned shares. This made sure their family had enough money for many years.
Emma Jung was very interested in her husband's work. She not only helped him but also became a respected analyst herself. She especially focused on the topic of the Holy Grail.
Emma Jung's Passing
Emma Jung died in 1955. Carl Jung passed away almost six years after her. After Emma died from cancer, Carl carved a stone in her memory. On it, he wrote, "She was the foundation of my house." People also say he cried out, "She was a queen! She was a queen!" as he was very sad. Her gravestone has the words: "Oh vase, sign of devotion and obedience."
