A Look at Its History

The story of Emmanuel Church began a long time ago. In 1846, people started holding church services in a schoolroom nearby. The church was officially created in 1875.

Building the Church

The beautiful building you see today was designed by an architect named John Alick Thomas. He designed it in a style called Gothic Revival. This style brings back the look of medieval churches.

Construction started on June 19, 1897. The church was finally finished on June 29, 1903. It was built using red bricks. Inside the church, there's a special painting by an artist named Frank O. Salisbury. You can find this painting in the south chapel.

What Was There Before?

The church used to have an older building on Mill Lane. Today, only its front wall remains. Flats called Cholmley Gardens now stand where the rest of the old church was. The original church hall, which faced West Hampstead Primary School, is now a community center called Dornfell Road Community Centre.
