Emperor Junna (淳和天皇, Junna-tennō, c. 786 – 11 June 840) was the 53rd emperor of Japan. He ruled from 823 to 833.

About Emperor Junna

Emperor Junna had six empresses and imperial partners. He also had 13 sons and daughters. His personal name was Ōtomo.

Junna is honored at his tomb. The place where he is buried is called the Ōharano no Nishi no Minenoe Imperial Mausoleum. It is located in Nishikyō-ku, Kyoto.

Key Moments in Junna's Life

  • 810: Junna became the crown prince (the next in line to be emperor) for Emperor Saga. He was 25 years old at this time. This happened after a rebellion by Emperor Heizei.
  • 30 May 823: Emperor Saga stepped down from the throne. Junna, who was Saga's younger brother, became the new emperor. He was the third son of Emperor Kanmu.
  • 22 March 833: After ruling for 10 years, Emperor Junna also stepped down. His adopted son became the new emperor, Emperor Ninmyō. After Junna left the throne, two former emperors were still alive: Emperor Saga and Emperor Junna. Saga was called the Senior Retired Emperor, and Junna was known as the Junior Retired Emperor.
  • 11 June 840: Former Emperor Junna passed away at the age of 55. After his death, a powerful leader named Fujiwara no Yoshifusa worked to make Emperor Montoku the next emperor, instead of Junna's son, Prince Tsunesada. Junna's death helped the Fujiwara clan become even more powerful in Japan.

Eras During Junna's Reign

The years of Emperor Junna's rule are known by different era names (called nengō in Japanese).
