Empress Dowager Wang (Jingzong) facts for kids
Empress Dowager Wang (王太后) was an important woman in the Tang dynasty of China. She was the mother of Emperor Jingzong and one of the wives of Emperor Muzong. She was formally known as Empress Gongxi (恭僖皇后). During her lifetime, she was also called Empress Dowager Baoli (寶曆太后) and later Empress Dowager Yi'an (義安太后). She passed away on February 22, 845.
Early Life
We don't know exactly when Empress Dowager Wang was born. Her family came from a place called Yue Prefecture, which is in modern-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang province. Her family had many officials, and her father, Wang Shaoqing, worked as a county magistrate. This meant he was an important local government official.
Life in the Palace
When she was young, the future Empress Dowager Wang joined the palace of the Crown Prince. She became a consort, or wife, to Prince Li Heng, who would later become Emperor Muzong. In 809, she gave birth to his oldest son, Li Zhan. This son would later become Emperor Jingzong.
In 820, Prince Li Heng became Emperor Muzong. Empress Dowager Wang was given a special title as an imperial consort, but she was not made empress. In 822, Emperor Muzong became very ill and could not walk. Because of this, her son Li Zhan was made the Crown Prince, meaning he was next in line to become emperor.
Becoming Empress Dowager
In the spring of 824, Emperor Muzong died. Her son, Li Zhan, then became the new emperor, known as Emperor Jingzong. At this time, Emperor Muzong's mother, Empress Dowager Guo, was given the even higher title of Grand Empress Dowager. Consort Wang, as the new emperor's mother, was honored as empress dowager.
Later in 824, there was a small uprising in the capital. Emperor Jingzong had to leave the palace for a short time. He was worried about the safety of both empresses dowager, so he made sure soldiers escorted them to a safe army camp. Once the uprising was stopped, everyone returned to the palace.
Changes in the Palace
In 826, Emperor Jingzong sadly passed away. After his death, there was a struggle among some powerful palace officials. Eventually, Emperor Jingzong's younger brother, Li Han, became the new emperor, known as Emperor Wenzong.
Emperor Wenzong honored his own mother, Consort Xiao, by making her empress dowager. He also honored Empress Dowager Wang by giving her the title "Empress Dowager Baoli." This name came from Emperor Jingzong's era name, "Baoli." At this time, there were three empresses dowager living in the palace: Grand Empress Dowager Guo, Empress Dowager Xiao, and Empress Dowager Baoli (Wang).
It is said that Emperor Wenzong was very respectful and caring towards all three empresses dowager. Whenever he received special or valuable food, he would first offer it to the ancestral temples, then to the empresses dowager, before he ate any himself.
In 831, some important officials suggested that having "Empress Dowager Baoli" was confusing, especially with Grand Empress Dowager Guo also in the palace. They suggested that empresses dowager should be named after their palace. So, they proposed that Empress Dowager Wang be called "Empress Dowager Yi'an" because she lived in Yi'an Hall. Emperor Wenzong agreed to this change.
Empress Dowager Wang died in 845. By this time, another of Emperor Jingzong's younger brothers, Emperor Wuzong, was the emperor. She was buried near Emperor Muzong's tomb.
