Emsger or South Bishop is a small island, also called an islet. It is located west of Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Emsger is the biggest islet in a group known as the Bishops and Clerks.
What is Emsger?
Emsger is a rocky islet that is not very big. It is part of a cluster of small islands and rocks. These are found off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales. The area is known for its strong tides and rough seas.
Where Does the Name Emsger Come From?
The name Emsger can also be written as Em-sger, Emskir, or Emskyr. The second part of the name, "sger," comes from an old language called Old Norse. This language was spoken by people from Scandinavia a long time ago. In Old Norse, "sker" means a small, isolated rock in the sea.
The South Bishop Lighthouse
A famous lighthouse, called the South Bishop Lighthouse, stands on Emsger. It was designed by an engineer named James Walker. The lighthouse started working in 1839. Lighthouses are tall towers with bright lights. They help guide ships safely at sea, especially at night or in bad weather.
The South Bishop Lighthouse is 37 metres (about 121 feet) tall. It is important for ships sailing near the coast of Wales. There is also a nearby rock called North Bishop, which is 44 metres (about 144 feet) high. However, North Bishop does not have a lighthouse.
