Encrucijada (Spanish pronunciation: [eŋkɾusiˈxaða]) is a town and a special area called a municipality in Cuba. It's located in the Villa Clara Province. This town was started way back in 1850. It became an official municipality in 1910.

A Look Back at Encrucijada's History

Long ago, the Encrucijada municipality was split into different areas called barrios. These included Centro, Paso Real, El Santo, and Vega Redonda. Later, in 1977, a part of Sagua la Grande called Calabazar de Sagua also became part of Encrucijada.

Encrucijada is connected by both train lines and roads.

Train Routes

A railway line runs through Encrucijada. It starts in Santa Clara and connects many towns. These towns include Crucero Margot, Luis Arcos Bergnes, Vega Alta, Canoa, Tuinicu, Constancia, Encrucijada itself, Mata, El Vaquerito, Aguada la Piedra, Cifuentes, San Diego del Valle, and Conyedo. The line then goes back to Santa Clara.

Main Roads

The town of Encrucijada has two main roads. The first is the Road of Malezas, which is part of the 6th South Avenue. This road goes south towards Santa Clara. The second important road is the Circuito Norte. This road links Encrucijada to Calabazar de Sagua and San Antonio de las Vueltas.

Population of Encrucijada

In 2004, the municipality of Encrucijada had a population of 33,641 people. The total area of the municipality is about 345 square kilometers (133 square miles). This means there were about 97.5 people living in each square kilometer. By 2022, the population had changed to 31,500 people.

Several notable individuals have connections to Encrucijada:

  • Onelio Jorge Cardoso (1914-1986) was a famous Cuban writer. He was born in Calabazar, which is part of the Encrucijada municipality.
  • Jesús Menéndez Larrondo (1911-1948) was an important leader for workers and a politician.
  • Abel Santamaría Cuadrado (1927-1953) was a key figure in the Cuban Revolution. He was born in Constancia.
  • Haydée Santamaría Cuadrado (1922-1980) was also a revolutionary. She was Abel's sister and was also born in Constancia.
