Engelhard is a small community in Hyde County, North Carolina, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area set up by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting population data. Engelhard is also a fishing community. It is located on the mainland of Hyde County and has easy access to the Pamlico Sound, a large body of water. In 2020, about 374 people lived there.

History of Engelhard
Two important historic places in Engelhard are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are called Inkwell and Wynne's Folly. Being on this list means they are special places worth protecting because of their history.
Geography and Location
Engelhard is located in the eastern part of Hyde County. A main road, U.S. Route 264, goes right through the community. This road can take you about 46 miles (74 km) northeast to Manteo or about 47 miles (76 km) west to Belhaven.
The community covers a total area of about 3.23 square miles (8.33 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Engelhard is found at the very end of Far Creek, which is a small waterway connected to the Pamlico Sound. The water level in Far Creek changes with the tides, meaning it's a "tidal inlet."

Education in Engelhard
The main school for students in Engelhard is Mattamuskeet School. This school is part of the Hyde County Schools system.
In the past, during a time when schools were separated by race (this was called de jure segregation), black students in Engelhard went to Davis School by the 1960s. This school was created by combining earlier schools for black students. Black high school students attended Hyde County Training School in Sladesville. White high school students went to East Hyde School.
For reading and learning, the BHM Regional Library runs the Engelhard Library, which serves the community.
