Englewood (once called Englevale) is a small, quiet place in Humboldt County, California. It's not a city with its own government, so it's called an unincorporated community.
Englewood is located about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) east-southeast of Redcrest. It sits at an elevation of 364 feet (111 meters) above sea level. In 2009, Englewood was home to just a few houses and an old, unused sawmill.
A Look Back in Time
Englewood has a bit of history, especially with its post office. The first post office in Englewood opened in 1880. It was located "on the Davis place," about 7 miles from a spot called Camp Grant. Henry D. Davis was the first postmaster, which is the person in charge of a post office. This post office served the community from 1880 to 1891.
Later, another post office called Englevale opened. This one operated for a short time, from 1893 to 1894.
Newspaper Days
Englewood even had its own newspaper! H.S. Shaw was the editor of a newspaper called the Englewood Star. This newspaper was published some years before 1888, sharing local news with the community.
A Trip to Englewood in 1888
In August 1888, a person named H.H. Niebur wrote about a fun trip his family took. They traveled from Phillipsville to Englewood, a journey of 22 miles (about 35 km).
Their path took them mostly through tall, beautiful redwoods trees. They saw very few oak trees along the way. They also passed over the mouth of the South Fork of the Eel River.
When they reached the Englewood prairie, which is a wide, open grassland, they found the post office. They also found a hotel run by Mr. and Mrs. H. Davis, and a farm owned by Mr. Sears. This gives us a picture of what Englewood was like over a hundred years ago!
