Kids Encyclopedia Facts

English Bar was a small town in Yuba County, California. It was once a busy place where miners lived and a stop for stagecoaches.

It was located on the north bank of the North Yuba River, about 2 miles (3.2 km) downstream from a place called Bullards Bar.

How Did English Bar Start?

English Bar began in 1851 during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush. Two miners from England were the first to start digging for gold there. Their success led to the creation of this small settlement.

What Was a Stage Stop?

A "stage stop" was like a gas station and rest stop for horse-drawn carriages called stagecoaches. These coaches carried people, mail, and goods across the country. Stage stops like English Bar provided a place for travelers to rest, eat, and change horses before continuing their journey.
