Enric Bernat's Early Life
Enric Bernat came from a family in Catalonia, Spain, who had been making sweets for a long time. He was the third generation in his family to work as a sweet maker. He started his career helping out in his parents' cake shop. This early experience taught him a lot about making tasty treats.
In the early 1950s, Enric moved to northern Spain. He went there to help a factory that made apple jam get back on its feet. This showed he was good at business and had new ideas.
Creating Chupa Chups
Enric Bernat had a brilliant idea for a new kind of candy: a lollipop! He thought it would be much easier for kids to eat candy on a stick without getting their hands sticky. He shared his idea with some people who had invested in the jam factory. They weren't interested in his lollipop idea and decided to leave.
But Enric didn't give up! In 1958, he took over the company himself. He then changed its name to Chupa Chups. This was the start of a very famous candy brand.
The Chupa Chups Logo
In 1969, something really cool happened for Chupa Chups. The famous artist Salvador Dalí designed the company's logo. He was paid a lot of money for his creative work. Dalí's design is still used today, making the Chupa Chups logo one of the most recognizable in the world.
Later Life and Business Ventures
Enric Bernat was always looking for new business challenges. In the 1980s, he tried to buy an insurance company called Iberia de Seguros. He wanted to use it to start a new investment bank in Catalonia. Even though this plan didn't work out, he still gained something important. He became the owner of Gaudi's amazing building, Casa Batlló, in Barcelona.
In 1991, Enric decided to let his son, Xavier, take charge of Chupa Chups. This allowed him to step back a bit from the daily running of the company. A few years later, in 1994, the company launched a new product called Smint. Smint became another popular brand under the Chupa Chups family.
Family and Legacy
Enric Bernat was married to Núria Serra. They had five children together: three sons and two daughters. All of his children were still alive when he passed away.
Enric Bernat died at his home in Barcelona on December 27, 2003. He was 80 years old and had been ill. Many people attended his funeral in the Les Corts area of Barcelona.
A few years after his death, in 2006, Enric Bernat's sons sold the Chupa Chups company. It was bought by an Italian-Dutch company called Perfetti van Melle. Even though the company is now owned by someone else, Enric Bernat's legacy as the creator of the lollipop we all know and love lives on!
