Enrique Amorim (born July 25, 1900 – died July 28, 1960) was a famous Uruguayan novelist and writer. He was well-known for his stories, especially Las quitanderas, which was about life in the countryside. He was also known for his left-wing politics, which means he believed in ideas that aimed to help ordinary people and create a more equal society.
His Life Story
Enrique Amorim was born in Salto, Uruguay. His parents were wealthy cattle ranchers, meaning they owned many cows and a lot of land. His father came from Portugal, and his mother was from the Basque region.
Enrique traveled a lot in Europe and Latin America. During his travels, he met and became friends with many important writers of his time. Later, he had a house built in Salto, which was designed by the famous architect Le Corbusier.
In the 1920s, Amorim wrote for an Argentine magazine called Los Pensadores. This magazine, and the publisher Claridad, were connected to a group of writers in Buenos Aires called the Boedo group. This group had political ideas that focused on social justice and helping workers.
In 1947, Enrique Amorim officially joined the Communist Party of Uruguay. This was a political party that believed in a society where everyone is equal and resources are shared. He also helped to build a monument in Salto. This monument honored Federico García Lorca, a famous poet and playwright who was killed during the Spanish Civil War.
Enrique Amorim is even mentioned in a story by another famous writer, Jorge Luis Borges, called "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius."
