Enrique Castro was an important general from Uruguay. He lived in the 1800s and was part of the Colorados. He fought in several big wars in South America. These included the Argentine Civil Wars, the Uruguayan Civil War, and the Paraguayan War. He is also remembered for helping to start the Quebracho Revolution .

Who Was Enrique Castro?
Enrique Castro was born in 1817. His birthplace was a military camp called Pueblo Barceló
. His father was Mateo Castro.Early Military Life
In 1836, Enrique Castro joined Fructuoso Rivera in a rebellion. He fought against an invasion led by Pascual Echagüe. During this fight, he was badly hurt.
In 1846, Castro was injured again by a spear. Luckily, his friend Timoteo Aparicio saved his life. Castro was then captured by the Blancos. He was sent to Entre Ríos, where he joined the army of Justo José de Urquiza.
Fighting in Argentina
Castro returned to Uruguay for a short time in 1851. This was during Urquiza's fight against Manuel Oribe. Castro took part in important battles like the Battle of Caseros. He also fought in the battles of Cepeda and Pavón. He rose through the ranks to become a colonel in the Argentine Army.
Leading in Uruguay
In 1863, Venancio Flores started a rebellion against President Bernardo Prudencio Berro. Castro joined Flores, leading 250 men into the country. He became the Chief of Staff for the rebels.
After the rebellion succeeded, Castro became the political leader of Salto. Later, he fought in the Paraguayan War. During this war, he earned the rank of general. In 1870, Castro became the General Commander of the Campaign. He took over from José Gregorio Suárez.
General Castro then had to fight against the Revolution of the Lances. This rebellion was led by his old friend, Timoteo Aparicio. Castro won the Battle of Manantiales during this conflict.
Later Years and Revolutions
Castro supported Lorenzo Latorre when he was elected. He was put in charge of troops south of the Negro River. However, he disagreed with the leader Máximo Santos. Because of this, he moved to Buenos Aires.
In Buenos Aires, he helped plan the Quebracho Revolution
. He was made a general in chief for this revolution. He led the invasion of Uruguay on March 28, 1886, along with José Miguel Arredondo. They were defeated, and Castro had to go into exile in Argentina.He returned to Uruguay when a new government was formed. He got his position as general back.
