Enrique Jorge Morea (born April 11, 1924 – died March 15, 2017) was a famous tennis player from Argentina. He was known for his strong performance in major tennis tournaments around the world during the 1940s and 1950s. Morea achieved a high ranking in the tennis world and won important medals for his country.

Enrique Morea's Tennis Career

Enrique Morea was a talented right-handed tennis player. He started his amateur career in 1944 and played until 1968. He won 22 singles titles during his career. In 1953, a tennis expert named Lance Tingay ranked Morea as the world's No. 10 player. This was a great achievement for an Argentine player at that time.

Grand Slam Success

Morea had some notable achievements in the Grand Slam tournaments. These are the four biggest tennis events each year: the Australian Open, French Championships (now French Open), Wimbledon, and the US Open.

  • French Championships: Morea reached the semifinals of the singles competition twice. In 1953, he made it to the semifinals, where he lost to Ken Rosewall. He repeated this success in 1954, losing to Art Larsen in the semifinals.
  • Wimbledon: He reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in both 1946 and 1947.
  • US Open: In 1955, Morea also reached the fourth round of the US Open.

Mixed Doubles Title

One of Morea's biggest wins was in mixed doubles. In 1950, he won the mixed-doubles title at the French Championships. He teamed up with Barbara Scofield from the United States to win this major championship.

He also reached the mixed-doubles final at Wimbledon three times:

In all three finals, they lost to the team of Doris Hart and Frank Sedgman or Vic Seixas.

Pan American Games Medals

Enrique Morea also represented Argentina in the Pan American Games. These games are a major multi-sport event for athletes from the Americas.

He won several medals at the first men's tennis competition in the Pan American Games:

  • 1951 Pan American Games (Buenos Aires): He won two gold medals! One was in men's singles, and the other was in men's doubles. He also won a silver medal in mixed doubles.
  • 1955 Pan American Games (Mexico City): He continued his success by winning two more silver medals. These were in men's singles and mixed doubles.

Later Life

After his playing career, Enrique Morea remained involved in tennis. As of 2014, he was the honorary president of the Asociación Argentina de Tenis (AAT), which is the main tennis organization in Argentina. He passed away on March 15, 2017, at the age of 92.
