From Doctor to Pilot
Enrique Piñeyro was born in Italy in 1956. His mother's family, the Roccas, are very wealthy and control a large group of industrial companies called Techint.
Piñeyro first trained to be a doctor. Later, he decided to follow another passion and became an airline pilot in Argentina in 1988. He worked for an airline called LAPA, where he flew planes like the Boeing 737 and Saab 340.
Speaking Out for Safety
While working at LAPA, Piñeyro became worried. He believed the airline was not following important safety rules. He spoke up about his concerns, but sadly, a terrible accident happened. In 1999, LAPA flight 3142 crashed, and many people were hurt.
After the crash, Piñeyro became a well-known public figure. He shared his experiences to show why airline safety is so important. His actions helped expose the problems at LAPA, which later went out of business.
Using Film to Make a Change
Piñeyro decided to use movies to tell his story and fight for important causes. He owns a film production company in Argentina called Aquafilms.
Whisky Romeo Zulu
In 2004, Piñeyro directed and starred in his first movie, Whisky Romeo Zulu. The film is based on his own life as a pilot at LAPA. It tells the story of his struggle to warn everyone about the airline's safety problems before the crash. The movie was a success and showed people how one person's voice can make a difference.
Air Force, Incorporated
His next big project was a documentary called Air Force, Incorporated. In this film, Piñeyro argued that the Air Force should not be in charge of guiding regular passenger planes. He believed this job should be done by a non-military group. After the film was released, the government agreed and made changes. This earned Piñeyro the nickname "the Michael Moore of Argentina" because, like the American filmmaker, he uses movies to point out problems and create positive change.
A Voice for Justice
Piñeyro's work goes beyond airline safety. He is dedicated to fighting for human rights and justice in many ways.
Innocence Project Argentina
He helped start Innocence Project Argentina. This organization is part of a worldwide Innocence Network. It provides free legal help to people who have been convicted of crimes but say they are innocent. The group works to find evidence to prove their innocence and fix the causes of unfair convictions.
Humanitarian Flights
Piñeyro owns a Boeing 787 airplane that he uses for humanitarian missions. In 2022, he used his plane to support protests for women's rights in Iran. This was in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died after being arrested by Iran's morality police.
To show his support, Piñeyro had powerful messages written on the side of his plane. The messages said, "No woman should be forced to cover her head" and "No woman should be killed for not covering her head." The plane also featured photos of Mahsa Amini and an Iranian soccer player, Amir Nasr-Azadani, who faced punishment for supporting the protests.
Stage and Screen Career
Besides his activism, Piñeyro has a long career in acting and directing. He has also created a popular stage show.
Theatre
From 2014 to 2020, Piñeyro wrote and performed in a play called "Volar es humano, aterrizar es divino" ("Flying is human, landing is divine"). In the show, he mixed stories about flying with stand-up comedy. It was a huge success in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was also performed in Madrid, Spain, and Milan, Italy.
