Epulafquén Lake: A Patagonian Gem

Epulafquén Lake is special because it is connected to another lake called Huechulafquen Lake. They are so close that they are often thought of as one big lake.

How the Lakes Connect

A small channel separates Epulafquén Lake from Huechulafquen Lake. This channel was created when a small volcanic cone appeared during the Holocene period. The cone pushed up the land, making a natural divider between the two lakes.

Unique Features of the Lake

One of the most interesting things about Epulafquén Lake is a large delta on its southern shore. This delta was formed by lava flowing from the Huanquihue volcano. It's a cool example of how volcanoes can shape the land around lakes.
