Eric H. Kearney, born in 1963, is an American politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He served as a state senator for the 9th District in the Ohio Senate.

About Eric Kearney
Eric Kearney graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati in 1981. He went on to earn a degree in English from Dartmouth College. Later, he studied law and received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati Law School.
His Career Before Politics
Before becoming a senator, Eric Kearney helped start a company called Sesh Communications. This company became one of the biggest publishing companies owned by African Americans in the area. They published newspapers like The Cincinnati Herald, The Dayton Defender, and Our Week. Eric Kearney is also a partner in a law firm called Cohen, Todd, Kite & Standford, LLC.
Serving in the Ohio Senate
Eric Kearney became a state senator for Ohio's 9th District. He was chosen for this role when the previous senator, Mark Mallory, left the position.
First Election as Senator
After being appointed, Eric Kearney had to run in an election to keep his seat. He won the primary election, which is when people from the same political party choose their candidate. Then, in the general election, he ran against a Republican candidate named Tom Brown. Eric Kearney won this election by a large number of votes.
Key Roles and Initiatives
During his time in the Senate, Eric Kearney was given important roles. He was part of the Senate Finance and Financial Institutions Committee. He also served as the treasurer for the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus.
He started an annual tradition of walking from Cincinnati to the Ohio Statehouse. He did this to bring attention to the importance of fighting childhood obesity and supporting physical education in schools.
Re-election and Leadership
In 2010, Eric Kearney ran for re-election and won a second term as senator. In 2012, his fellow Democratic senators chose him to be the Minority Leader of the Senate. This meant he was the main leader for the Democratic Party in the Ohio Senate.
Later Political Activities
In 2013, Eric Kearney was chosen to be the running mate for the Democratic candidate for governor, Ed FitzGerald. However, he later stepped down from this role due to some financial challenges he and his wife were facing with their newspaper business.
Eric Kearney was also featured in a 2016 documentary called The Student Body. In the film, he discussed his support for a bill that would require schools in Ohio to check students' BMI. He continued to support these health policies.
Personal Life
Eric Kearney is married to Jan-Michele Kearney. They have two children named Celeste and Asher. The family lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
