Eric Andrew Moreland (born December 24, 1991) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China's top league, the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Before playing professionally, he played college basketball for the Oregon State Beavers.
Early Basketball Journey
High School Years
After finishing at Hightower High School in January 2010, Eric Moreland spent a semester at Ocean Academy in Bayville, New Jersey. There, he showed his skills by averaging 15.5 points and 2.6 blocks per game.
College Career at Oregon State
Eric first planned to play college basketball for UTEP. But when their coach left, he decided to join Oregon State instead. The NCAA allowed him to start playing right away.
In his first season (2010–11), Eric played only four games. He had a shoulder injury that needed surgery. Luckily, he was given a "medical hardship," which meant he could still play for four more years in college.
During his freshman year (2011–12), Eric played in all 36 games. He was amazing at blocking shots, leading his conference (the Pac-12). He even set a new school record with 69 blocked shots in one season! He averaged 5.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
In his sophomore year, Eric continued to be a strong defensive player. He was recognized for his defense in the Pac-12. He also had two games where he scored a lot of points and grabbed many rebounds. He averaged 9.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.
For his junior year, Eric played in 20 games. He was suspended for the first 12 games due to team rules. Even so, he again earned honors for his defense. He was one of only three Oregon State players to average over 10 rebounds in more than one season. He averaged 8.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game.
In April 2014, Eric decided to enter the NBA draft early. He left Oregon State as the school's all-time leader in blocked shots. He was also fifth in total rebounds. He earned his degree in Human Development and Family Science in March 2014.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting in the NBA and D-League
Eric Moreland was not chosen in the 2014 NBA draft. However, he joined the Sacramento Kings for the NBA Summer League. He later signed with the Kings. He also played for their minor league team, the Reno Bighorns, in the NBA Development League (now G-League).
He faced some injuries early on. In 2015, he had a shoulder injury. In 2016, he broke a bone in his foot. Despite these setbacks, he kept working hard.
Time with Canton Charge
In 2016, Eric signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers but was later waived. He then joined the Canton Charge in the NBA Development League. He played very well there. In 2017, he was named an NBA D-League All-Star. He also made the All-NBA D-League Third Team and the NBA D-League All-Defensive Team.
Playing for the Detroit Pistons
In July 2017, Eric signed with the Detroit Pistons. On January 6, 2018, he started his first NBA game. He scored 8 points and had 4 assists. In the last game of the season, he had his best NBA game. He scored 16 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and had 4 blocks and 4 steals.
Joining the Toronto Raptors and Winning a Championship
After leaving the Pistons, Eric briefly played for the Phoenix Suns. He then joined the Toronto Raptors in March 2019. He played a few games with them.
The Raptors signed him for the rest of the 2019 season. Eric Moreland became an NBA champion when the Raptors won the 2019 NBA Finals. They defeated the Golden State Warriors in six games. This was a huge achievement in his career!
