The Tom and Liz Austen Mysteries
Eric Wilson started writing because of his students. He was a teacher and noticed that some of his students found books boring. He wanted to write stories that would be exciting and fun for them to read. His first short stories were very popular with his students. However, it took a while for publishers to accept his books. They turned down his first five stories!
How Eric Wilson Writes His Books
Eric Wilson created a special way of writing based on what his eighth-grade students liked. His books are usually short and easy to read. They always begin with a thrilling scene to grab your attention right away. His stories have lots of talking between characters, which is called dialogue. They also have many "cliffhanger" moments. A cliffhanger makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next!
Wilson's books are similar to the Hardy Boys adventure series. But he also tries to make readers feel like they are solving the mystery too. This is like the "true" mysteries written by authors such as Agatha Christie.
Canadian Settings in His Stories
A cool thing about Eric Wilson's novels is that they feature Canadian places. He often includes interesting facts about Canadian history and famous landmarks in his stories. This helps readers learn about Canada while enjoying a mystery.
The Tom and Liz Austen books have won several awards in Canada. These include the Crime Writers of Canada Chairman's Award. He also won the Canadian Booksellers Association's Author of the Year Award in 1993. Eric Wilson currently lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
