Erich Iltgen (born July 10, 1940 – died June 9, 2019) was an important German politician. He belonged to a political group called the Christian Democratic Union party. For nearly 20 years, from 1990 to 2009, he was the president of the state parliament in Saxony, which is known as the Landtag of Saxony.

Early Life and Family
Erich Iltgen was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1940. This was during the early years of World War II. In 1943, his family moved to Dresden. They hoped it would be safer from air attacks there.
Erich Iltgen was a Roman Catholic. He had four children with his first wife, who passed away before him. He married his second wife, Elizabeth, in 2005.
His Career Journey
Erich Iltgen started his career by learning practical skills. From 1954 to 1957, he trained to be a machinist for farms and a motor mechanic. After that, he studied engineering from 1958 to 1964. He focused on agricultural engineering and technology for heating and ventilation.
Later, he worked in power plant construction from 1964 to 1979. Then, he became a manager for investments in Dresden from 1979 to 1985. He also held leadership roles within the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen, a church area. He was head of the Cathedral from 1985 to 1988. From 1988 to 1990, he led the Diocese itself.
Joining Politics
Erich Iltgen became active in politics around 1989. He helped lead discussions in Dresden. He also worked on a committee for education in Saxony.
In June 1990, he officially joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. He was elected to the very first parliament of Saxony on October 27, 1990. He became its president. He was re-elected as president after state elections in 1994, 1999, and 2004. He represented different areas of Dresden during these times. He was also a member of the CDU's national leadership group.
Retirement and Other Roles
In 2009, Erich Iltgen decided not to run for re-election. He retired from his role as president of the Landtag of Saxony. This was a few weeks after his 69th birthday.
Even after retiring from the parliament, he stayed active. He was an honorary president of the National Tourism Association. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees for the New Saxon Art Association. He had served as its president from 1990 to 1991.
