Erin Hanson's Early Life
Erin Hanson started painting when she was a child. She learned many art techniques. These included oils, watercolor, and drawing. By age 10, she was already painting pets for her neighbors. At 12, she worked after school in a mural studio. There, she learned to paint huge canvases.
Hanson has shared that seeing Vincent van Gogh's painting "Irises" was a big moment for her. It made her love Impressionism. She later studied figure drawing at Otis College of Art and Design. After college, she started a business. But her love for rock climbing and hiking led her back to painting. She found inspiration in nature.
How Erin Hanson Paints
Erin Hanson uses a special method called "Open Impressionism." She uses wide, bold brush strokes. She also paints alla prima, which means "all at once." This technique involves applying wet paint over other wet layers. She does not wait for the paint to dry.
Hanson often uses only four or five colors in her paintings. She uses minimal brush strokes to create her art. Before she paints, Hanson takes many photos. She uses these photos as guides in her studio. In 2022, it was noted that her unique painting style was part of a large collection of images. This collection was used to help train a computer program that creates images from text.
