Erin Hanson (born 1981) is an American painter. She is famous for her unique "Open Impressionism" style. This way of painting uses fewer brush strokes and thick layers of paint.
Early Life and Art
Erin Hanson started painting when she was a child. She learned about different art materials like oils and watercolors. By age 10, she was already painting pictures of her neighbors' pets for money! When she was 12, she worked in a studio that painted large murals. There, she learned to use acrylic paints on huge canvases.
Hanson says that seeing Vincent van Gogh's painting "Irises" when she was in elementary school was a big moment for her. It made her love Impressionism. She later studied art in college, focusing on drawing people. After college, she started a business. But her love for rock climbing and hiking led her back to painting.
Her Painting Style
Erin Hanson calls her painting method "Open Impressionism." This means she uses wide, bold brush strokes. She also uses a technique called alla prima, which means she applies wet paint on top of wet paint. She doesn't wait for the layers to dry.
Hanson often uses only four or five colors in her paintings. She uses very few brush strokes to create her art. Before she paints, she takes many photos of nature. She uses these photos in her studio to help her create her beautiful artworks.
What She Paints
Hanson's paintings show the amazing natural beauty of the United States. She especially loves the American West. She often goes on trips to National Parks and other wild places. These trips include backpacking, rock climbing, and taking photos.
Some of her favorite places to paint are Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Mojave Desert in California. She has also painted scenes from Joshua Tree National Park and the Anza-Borrego Desert.
Art Shows and Awards
Erin Hanson's art has been shown in many art galleries and museums. These include the St. George Art Museum and the La Salle University Art Museum. In 2019, her painting "Desert in Color" won a special award. It was named "Best of Show" at the Cowgirl Up! art show in Wickenburg, Arizona. This show features top women artists from all over the country.
