Mall History: How It Started
Erin Mills Town Centre was built on land that was bought by a company called "Don Mills Developments" way back in 1954. The mall first opened its doors in 1989. It was first owned by Cadillac Fairview until 2010. Then, the Ontario Pension Board bought it for a lot of money.
Construction for the mall started in 1987 and finished in 1989. When it first opened, there was a huge clock tower in the middle of the mall. But during a big renovation, this clock tower was replaced with a cool glass sphere.
Some parts of the mall have changed over the years. For example, a Cineplex Odeon movie theatre closed in 2000. Its space was then taken over by stores like Old Navy and Sport Chek. There was also a daycare that became more shops in 2005. The mall even had a mini-golf course in the main area, but that turned into a fancy cafe.
In 2008, a new outdoor shopping area was built on the mall grounds. It included stores like Indigo Books and LCBO. There was also an older outdoor area with shops like Dollarama, Home Sense, and Menchies.
Big Changes: The Redevelopment
In July 2013, the mall announced a huge renovation project that cost a lot of money. One of the biggest changes was replacing the old clock tower with a giant glass sphere. This sphere is 283 feet around! It was designed to let in more natural light and open up the view inside the mall.
When the clock tower was removed, it made space for a new main area and a cool "infinity fountain." This central area is now used for events and activities. During the holidays, it even hosts a Christmas tree and Santa's village. This was the first major renovation since the mall opened in 1989.
Other updates included making the skylights higher and replacing them with modern windows. New LED lights were added, and the floors got a new look with European limestone. The main entrance was also updated.
The food court was completely redesigned and made bigger in Spring 2015. It now has high ceilings and large windows. Many stores, like Shoppers Drug Mart, also got a modern makeover to match the new look of the mall.
The construction company for this big project was Broccolini Construction Inc. Even during all this work, Erin Mills Town Centre stayed open for shoppers.
