Brigadier-General Ernest Douglas Money (born March 11, 1866 – died December 4, 1952) was an important officer in the British Indian Army. He was known for his courage and leadership during several military campaigns.

Ernest Money's Military Career

Early Life and Joining the Army

Ernest Money was born in Harbledown, Kent, England. His father, Major-General Robert Money, was also a high-ranking army officer. Ernest went to Sherborne School for his education.

In 1888, Ernest joined the Lincolnshire Regiment as an officer. Soon after, he moved to India. From 1889 to 1890, he worked as an aide-de-camp. This means he was a personal assistant to the Governor of the United Provinces.

Serving in India's Frontier

In 1892, Ernest became a Lieutenant and joined the Indian Army. He was assigned to the 1st Prince of Wales's Own Gurkha Rifles. This was a famous unit known for its brave soldiers.

He took part in several important military operations. These included the Isazai Expedition in 1892 and the Waziristan Expedition from 1894 to 1895. He also served in the Tirah Campaign between 1897 and 1898. He was promoted to Captain in 1899 and then to Major in 1906.

Royal Duties and World War I

In 1911, Ernest Money was the second-in-command of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Gurkha Rifles. He also served as an Assistant Military Secretary to King George V. This was when the King visited India for the Delhi Durbar. For his service, Ernest was given the award of Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE).

During the First World War, Ernest stayed in India with his Gurkha battalion. He became a Lieutenant-Colonel and took command of the battalion in 1915. He led his troops in battles against local tribes. These included operations against the Swatis and Boners in 1915. He also participated in the Mohmand Expedition from 1916 to 1917.

High Command and Retirement

In 1917, Ernest Money served in Waziristan. During this time, he temporarily commanded the 45th (Jullundur) Brigade. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his bravery and leadership.

By 1918, he was promoted to Brigadier-General. He became the Inspector of Indian Depots for the 4th (Quetta) Division. In 1919, he led the Indian soldiers in the Peace Parade in London. This parade celebrated the end of World War I. For this, he received another honor, becoming a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1920.

Before retiring in 1920, he briefly commanded two more brigades. These were the 64th Indian Infantry Brigade in 1919 and the 66th Indian Infantry Brigade from 1919 to 1920.
