Ernesto Villegas was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1970. He is the youngest of eight children. His siblings include Mario, Vladimir, Alice, Clara, Esperanza, Tatiana, and Asia.

His father, Cruz Villegas, was a strong leader in trade unions. He was a communist and was sent to the Amazon jungle during the time of the Marcos Pérez Jiménez dictatorship. Cruz Villegas also led the United Workers of Venezuela (CUTV).

Ernesto's mother, Maja Poljak, was from Zagreb, Croatia (which was then Yugoslavia). She was Jewish and a social activist. She was also a photographer and a communist.
