Erodium astragaloides is a special kind of flowering plant that belongs to the Geraniaceae family, which also includes geraniums. This plant is very unique because it only grows in one specific place: the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain. When a plant or animal is found only in one area, it's called endemic.
Where It Lives: Its Habitat
This amazing plant grows in places with thin grasslands. It likes rocky and sandy soils that have a special type of rock called dolomite. Dolomitic soils are often not very developed, meaning they don't have a lot of rich dirt.
Erodium astragaloides often grows near a type of tree called Juniperus phoenicea. It lives as part of a plant community. This means it shares its home with many other special plants that are also endemic to the Sierra Nevada. Some of its plant neighbors include:
- Rothmaleria granatensis
- Helianthemum pannosum
- Silene boryi
- Convolvulus boissieri
- Anthyllis tejedensis
- Thymus granatensis
- Saxifraga erioblasta
These plants all live together in this unique mountain environment.
