Early Life and Service
Ervin Fowlkes was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. His birthday was January 18, 1922. His parents were Richard and Rosa Fowlkes.
Ervin also served his country. He was part of the United States Army. He served from 1942 to 1945 during World War II.
Playing Baseball
Ervin loved baseball, and so did his brother, Samuel. They both played for a team called the Boston Blues. This was in 1946. The Boston Blues were part of the United States League. However, that team and league later stopped playing.
By May 1947, Ervin was playing for another team. He joined the Detroit Senators. This team traveled around to play games. Ervin played with them for the rest of their season.
Joining the Homestead Grays
In 1948, Ervin Fowlkes joined the Homestead Grays. This was a very important team in the Negro leagues. That same year, the Homestead Grays won the 1948 Negro World Series!
We know that Ervin played in at least 16 games for the Grays. He got five hits in 47 chances to bat.
