Erwin de Vries (born December 21, 1929 – died January 31, 2018) was a famous artist from Suriname. He was known for his amazing paintings and sculptures.
Early Life and Education
Erwin de Vries was born in Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname. He was the half-brother of Henry Lucien de Vries, who later became the governor of Suriname. A governor is like a leader or a main official for a country or region.
Erwin's art teacher, Wim Bos Verschuur, saw his talent. He encouraged Erwin's parents to send him to the Netherlands to study art more. Erwin went to two important art schools there. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. He also attended the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Art Exhibitions and Famous Works
Erwin de Vries had his very first art show in 1948. It was held in his hometown of Paramaribo. After that, his artwork was shown in many important places. These included the Stedelijk Museum and the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, both in the Netherlands.
One of his most well-known works is the Nationaal Monument SlavernijverledenAmsterdam. This monument is a special sculpture. It remembers the history of slavery and celebrates freedom.
