Es doger is a super yummy and refreshing Indonesian dessert drink. It's made with coconut milk and shaved ice, and it often has a pretty pink color. This special treat is very famous in Bandung, a city in West Java.
The main part of Es doger is sweet coconut milk ice mixed with pink syrup. It's usually packed with tasty things like pacar cina merah delima (red tapioca pearls), fresh avocado, sweet fermented cassava (called tapai), black sticky rice (ketan hitam) also fermented, juicy jackfruit, small pieces of bread, and sweet condensed milk. You can even choose plain white or chocolate-flavored condensed milk! The lovely pink color comes from rose syrup, cocopandan syrup, or a little bit of pink food coloring. You'll often find Es doger sold by friendly street vendors in big Indonesian cities like Bandung, Jakarta, Malang, and Surabaya.
Is Es Doger Like Other Drinks?
You might hear about a Malaysian drink called ais Bandung. It's also made with coconut milk ice and pink rose syrup, which sounds a lot like Es doger! However, ais Bandung usually has fewer extra ingredients. Both drinks are pink and Es doger is strongly connected to the city of Bandung. But it's not totally clear if these two drinks are related or just happen to be similar.
