History of Escada
Escada was founded in 1978 in Munich, Germany. It was started by Margaretha Ley and her husband, Wolfgang Ley. Margaretha used to be a model. She also learned how to make clothes at the Royal Court in Stockholm. She became famous for her bold and feminine designs.
The first Escada women's collection came out in 1978. It had special details and decorations. The company quickly became known for its unique designs. They used unusual color mixes and patterns. They also had special embroidery and knitted clothes. Escada grew very fast and kept adding new collections.
In 1986, Escada became a public company. This meant people could buy shares in the company. The Leys still owned most of it. Escada also made clothes under other names. They even made perfumes, starting in 1990.
Margaretha Ley passed away in 1992. After that, different designers led the brand. In 1995, Escada started a new line called Escada Sport. They also launched their own collection of bags and shoes. They worked with other companies, like Procter & Gamble, for licenses. In 2001, Escada started making lingerie. The company decided to focus on its main Escada brand. They stopped making most of their other smaller lines.
In 2002, Escada left the beauty business. They sold their perfume and cosmetic parts to Wella. Wella then made a deal to keep using the Escada name for fragrances.
In 2008, Bruno Sälzer became Escada's CEO. Under his leadership, the company sold some of its other brands. In 2009, Escada faced financial difficulties. They had to reorganize their business.
In November 2009, a billionaire from India, Lakshmi Mittal, bought the company. His daughter-in-law, Megha Mittal, became the new owner. She also became the head of the company's board.
After the sale, new designers took over. In 2017, Niall Sloan became the Global Design Director. He showed his first collection for Escada at New York Fashion Week. This was to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary.
In 2019, the British singer Rita Ora became the face of Escada's spring campaign. Rita Ora helped design a special Escada Heart Bag. A part of the money from selling this bag went to a charity called Women for Women International.
In October 2019, Mittal sold Escada to Regent, L.P.. This is a global investment firm. In September 2020, the company again faced financial challenges. They planned to limit their operations in Germany. They also planned to reduce their number of stores.
