Eshaq Jahangiri Kouhshahi (born January 21, 1958) is an Iranian politician. He served as the First Vice President of Iran from 2013 to 2021 under President Hassan Rouhani. Before that, he was the Minister of Industries and Mines from 1997 to 2005. He also served as the governor of Isfahan Province and was a member of the Iranian Parliament for two terms.

Early Life and Education
Eshaq Jahangiri was born on January 21, 1958, in Sirjan County, located in Kerman Province, Iran. He studied physics at the University of Kerman. Before the Iranian Revolution, he was involved in groups that supported the revolution. He even got hurt by the Shah's forces during that time. Later, he earned a PhD in industrial management from Islamic Azad University. He is married to Manijeh Jahangiri, and they have four children: Hossein, Hesam, Faezeh, and Hoda.
Political Career
Jahangiri started his political journey after the Iranian Revolution. In July 1980, he became the deputy head of the agriculture department in Kerman. Two years later, in 1982, he became its head.
Serving in Parliament
He was elected to the Iranian Parliament in 1984 and was re-elected in the next election in 1988. This means he served two terms as a Member of Parliament.
Governor and Minister Roles
On September 1, 1992, he was appointed as the governor of Isfahan Province. He held this important position until August 20, 1997. After that, he became the Minister of Mines and Metals under President Mohammad Khatami. His job title later changed to Minister of Industries and Mines. He continued in this role until 2005.
Becoming First Vice President
In 2013, Eshaq Jahangiri was considered a possible candidate for the presidential election. However, he decided not to run and instead supported Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. He also helped manage Rafsanjani's campaign. Jahangiri was one of the people who started the Executives of Construction Party and was its secretary general from 2006 to 2010.
On July 23, 2013, it was announced that he would become the First Vice President under President Hassan Rouhani. This was officially confirmed on July 29, and he was formally appointed on August 4, 2013. He took over from Mohammad Reza Rahimi.
2017 Presidential Election
In April 2017, Jahangiri registered to run as a candidate in the 2017 Iranian presidential election. He was approved to be a candidate. Many people thought he decided to run to help support President Rouhani during the debates, and then he would step down before the actual voting. He did withdraw from the race on May 16, 2017. Later, Hassan Rouhani won the election, and Jahangiri was reappointed as the First Vice President.
COVID-19 Outbreak
In March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread in Iran, there were reports that Jahangiri had been infected with the virus. On March 11, a semi-official news agency confirmed his infection. However, by March 15, his office announced that he had tested negative and fully recovered. He then returned to his work.
Jahangiri's Brothers
Eshaq Jahangiri has four brothers: Ebrahim, Yaqub, Mohammad, and Mehdi. Mohammad and Yaqub sadly passed away during the Iran-Iraq War.
Mehdi Jahangiri
His brother, Mehdi Jahangiri, is known for establishing the Tourism Financial Group. He also founded a private company called "Semega," which focuses on cultural heritage and tourism investment in Iran. Additionally, he started a private bank called Tourism Bank.
