The First Vice President's Important Role
The job of the First Vice President was created in 1989. This role took over some of the duties that a "prime minister" used to have. The First Vice President is in charge of government meetings and helps make sure all the other vice presidents work together. The President must agree with their plans.
What Happens if the President Can't Work?
If the President cannot do their job, or if the position becomes empty, the First Vice President steps in. They become the acting President, but this must be approved by the Supreme Leader of Iran.
When the First Vice President is acting as President, a special group is formed. This group includes the acting President, the leader of the Parliament, and the head of the court system. They must make sure a new President is chosen within 50 days.
During this time, the Parliament cannot remove government ministers from their jobs. Also, new ministers cannot be stopped from joining the government. Important changes to the country's rules cannot be made, and big public votes (called referendums) cannot happen.
