Early Life and Education
Hassan Habibi was born in Tehran on January 29, 1937. He went to college in France, where he studied sociology. He earned a PhD in both law and sociology. While he was a student, he visited Ayatollah Khomeini when Khomeini was living in exile.
Political Career
After the Iranian Revolution, Hassan Habibi played a key role in shaping Iran's new government.
Drafting the Constitution
Ayatollah Khomeini asked Habibi to help write the new constitution for Iran. This was when Khomeini was in exile in Paris. Habibi's first draft was changed quite a bit after many people gave their opinions. The final version was approved by a public vote in November 1979.
Early Roles in Government
After the revolution, Habibi became the public spokesperson for the revolutionary council. He was one of the main people who worked on the first draft of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This draft was then sent to a special group called the Assembly of Experts for Constitution for more discussion. This group made big changes, like adding the position of "leader of the Islamic Republic." This new role gave a lot of power to the religious leaders. The changed constitution was approved by the people in 1979.
In 1980, Habibi ran for president but did not win. He later became a member of the Parliament for the Islamic Republican Party.
Important Government Positions
Habibi served as the Minister of Justice from 1984 to 1989. He then became the First Vice President of Iran in 1989. He held this important job for 12 years. He worked with President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani for eight years and then with President Mohammad Khatami for four years. In 2001, Mohammad Reza Aref took over his role as First Vice President.
Besides these roles, he also led the Academy of Persian Language and Literature. He was also a member of the Expediency Council, which is an important advisory body in Iran.
