Early Life and Education
Ebrahim Raisi was born on December 14, 1960, in Mashhad, Iran. His family was religious, and his father passed away when Ebrahim was only five years old.
He went to "Javadiyeh school" for his early education. Later, he began studying at a Hawza, which is an Islamic seminary. In 1975, he continued his religious studies at "Ayatollah Boroujerdi School" in Qom Seminary.
Raisi started his studies at the Qom Seminary when he was 15. He also spent a short time studying at the Navvab school. After that, he attended Ayatollah Sayyed Muhammad Mousavi Nezhad school, where he learned and also taught other students. In 1976, he returned to Qom to continue his education at the Ayatollah Borujerdi school.
Career in Government
Raisi held many important jobs in Iran's justice system. He was the Deputy Chief Justice from 2004 to 2014. Then, he became the Attorney General from 2014 to 2016. From 2019 to 2021, he served as the Chief Justice.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked as a prosecutor and deputy prosecutor in Tehran. He also led Astan Quds Razavi, a large religious organization, from 2016 to 2019.
Raisi first ran for president in the 2017 Iranian presidential election. He was the candidate for a conservative group called the Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces. He lost that election to the current president, Hassan Rouhani.
In 1988, Raisi was part of a committee that oversaw legal processes. This committee was involved in the execution of political prisoners in Iran during that year.
He ran for president again in 2021 and won with 62.9% of the votes. He then took over from Hassan Rouhani.
Presidency (2021–2024)
Ebrahim Raisi officially became the president of Iran on August 3, 2021. This was done through an order from the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. In his first speech as president, Raisi said he would stand strong against pressure from other countries. However, he also wanted to improve Iran's relationships with other nations, especially its neighbors.
He promised to support any diplomatic efforts to remove American sanctions. He also stated that Iran's nuclear program was only for peaceful uses. Raisi also said he would work to make life better for Iranians and protect human rights.

After the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021, Raisi said that the departure of American forces from Afghanistan created a chance for the country to become stable. He said Iran would help with this. He also asked all groups in Afghanistan to form a government that includes everyone. He later called for elections to choose a new Afghan government quickly.
Raisi also stated that Iran would not allow any terrorist groups, like the Islamic State, to set up near its border with Afghanistan. He said these groups should not be used to attack other countries. He again urged the Taliban to form a government that represents all people.

From February 14 to 17, 2023, Raisi visited China and met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. During their meeting, the two countries signed 20 agreements to work together and agreed to make their relationship stronger. After these talks, Saudi Arabia and Iran decided to restart their diplomatic ties on March 10. These ties had been cut in 2016. China helped arrange this deal after secret talks in Beijing.
Death
On May 19, 2024, a helicopter carrying Raisi crashed in a forest near Varzaqan. He died in the crash.
Raisi's body was taken to Birjand on May 23. Then, it was moved to his hometown of Mashhad, where he was buried on the same day at the Imam Reza shrine. Government offices and private businesses were closed on May 22 as a mark of respect.
