Esmeralda Herminia Mallada Invernizzi (born January 10, 1937 – died September 12, 2023) was an amazing Uruguayan astronomer and professor. She studied the stars and taught others about the universe. Because of her important work in science, an asteroid was named after her!
Becoming an Astronomer
Esmeralda Mallada loved learning about the universe. She studied cosmography, which is the study of the universe and how it works. Her teacher was Professor Alberto Pochintesta.
At the University of the Republic, Esmeralda studied alongside Gladys Vergara. Gladys helped her get ready for a big test to become a cosmography professor. Esmeralda passed the test and became a professor of cosmography and mathematics when she was just 21 years old!
She also taught at the university's Faculty of Sciences. There, she earned a special degree called a licentiate in astronomy. This means she became an expert in studying space.
An Asteroid Named After Her
On October 16, 1952, Esmeralda helped start a group called the Association of Amateur Astronomers (AAA) in Uruguay. This group was for people who loved astronomy as a hobby. In 2015, she became the honorary president of this group.
In 2015, something very special happened. The Minor Planet Center of the International Astronomical Union decided to name an asteroid after her! This asteroid orbits between Mars and Jupiter. Its name is 16277 Mallada.
This was a huge honor! It was the first time an asteroid was named after a Uruguayan woman astronomer. Esmeralda Mallada's name will forever be among the stars she loved to study.
