History of Ethelsville
How Ethelsville Got Its Name
Ethelsville was first called Yorkville. It got its current name from Ethel Burgin Hancock. She was the daughter of a local doctor named J. T. Hancock. His son, Thomas Hancock, became the town's first postmaster.
When the Town Was Formed
The town officially became a town, or "incorporated," around 1952 or 1956. At that time, Ethelsville was a busy stop for trains. Four freight trains and six passenger trains stopped there every day! But when the railroad stopped making stops in Ethelsville, fewer people lived there.
An Old Legend About Explorers
In 1843, a local person named John H. Alexander found something amazing. While plowing his fields, he discovered a shield and some copper scales. The shield had the word "Hispana" carved into it. Many historians believe this means that the famous Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, might have traveled through Pickens County. There's even a local story that De Soto and his men spent a winter on the hill where the Ethelsville Baptist Church now stands.
Moving the Town
The town of Ethelsville actually moved! In 1898, when the M & O railroad was built, the town moved about half a mile from its original spot.
