The Euarchonta are a special group of mammals. Think of them as a big family that includes some very interesting animals! This group contains four main types of mammals:

  • The colugos, also known as Dermoptera. These are often called "flying lemurs" because they can glide through the air.
  • The treeshrews, or Scandentia. They look a bit like squirrels but are not related to them.
  • An extinct group called Plesiadapiformes. These were ancient mammals that lived long ago and are now gone.
  • The primates. This group is very important because it includes monkeys, apes, and even humans!

What are Euarchontans?

Euarchontans are a "grandorder" of mammals. In biology, a grandorder is a way to group animals that are closely related. It's like a big branch on the tree of life. All the animals in the Euarchonta group share a common ancestor, meaning they all came from the same ancient animal many millions of years ago.

Where Do Euarchontans Fit In?

The Euarchonta group is part of an even larger group called the Euarchontoglires. This big group also includes another important family of mammals called the Glires.

The Glires group contains:

  • Rodents, like mice, rats, and squirrels.
  • Lagomorphs, which are rabbits, hares, and pikas.

So, you can think of it like this:

  • The very big group is called Euarchontoglires.
  • This big group splits into two main branches:
    • One branch is the Glires (rodents and lagomorphs).
    • The other branch is the Euarchonta (treeshrews, colugos, and primates).

This way of grouping animals helps scientists understand how different species are related to each other and how they evolved over millions of years.
