Eugénie Anne Claudine Le Sommer-Dariel, born on May 18, 1989, is a French professional footballer. She plays as a forward for the Liga MX Femenil club Toluca and the France national team. She often plays as a creative attacking midfielder or a left winger. She has also played as a second striker for her country.

Le Sommer is known as one of the most successful players in women's club football. She has scored more goals for France than any other player, both men and women. She has won 13 French league titles. She is also one of only three players to have won a record eight UEFA Women's Champions League titles with Lyon.

Early Life and Football Beginnings

Eugénie Le Sommer grew up in a big family with seven children, five girls and two boys. Her father, Thierry, was a retired policeman. Her mother also played football when she was younger.

Eugénie started playing football when she was just five years old. She joined the women's team at Trélissac FC. After four years there, she moved to AS Guermeur in the Brittany region of France. Later, she played for FC Lorient, one of the biggest clubs in the region. She won many awards with their youth teams. For example, her youth teams won the Coupe Fédérale 16 ans in 2005. They also won the Mozaïc Foot Challenge in 2006. This last competition was held at the famous Clairefontaine academy.

Club Career Highlights

Eugénie Le Sommer was chosen to attend CNFE Clairefontaine, which is a special academy for women footballers. After a short time there, she joined the D1 Féminine club Stade Briochin. In her first season with Saint-Brieuc, Le Sommer played in all 22 league matches. She scored four goals.

During the 2008–09 season, she scored 10 goals in 22 matches. Because of her great performance, she was nominated for the UNFP Female Player of the Year award. She finished second to Lyon player Louisa Necib.

Le Sommer started the 2009–10 season very strongly. She scored ten goals in her first seven league matches. This included three goals in one game against Toulouse. She ended the season as the league's top scorer. The next season, she was awarded the UNFP Female Player of the Year.

On June 30, 2010, Le Sommer announced she would join Lyon. Lyon was the four-time defending champion at the time. She left Stade Briochin after three successful seasons.

On August 30, 2020, Le Sommer scored the first goal in Lyon's 3–1 win over Wolfsburg. This was in the final of the 2019–20 UEFA Women's Champions League. This win was both Le Sommer's and Lyon's seventh overall in the competition. It was also their fifth win in a row.

On May 12, 2021, it was announced that Le Sommer would join OL Reign in the US. This was a loan for the 2021 season.

International Career for France

Le Sommer has played for France's national youth teams. She played for the under-17, under-19, and under-20 teams. With the under-19 team, she played in the 2007 and 2008 La Manga Cup tournaments. She also played in the 2007 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and the 2008 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship. France reached the semi-finals in 2007.

Le Sommer also played for the under-20 team in the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile. In this tournament, she scored four goals, which was the most on her team. This included two goals against Argentina. These goals helped France move to the knockout rounds. In the match against Nigeria, Le Sommer scored to tie the game. France won 3–2. She was given the Bronze Ball award as the tournament's third-best player.

On February 12, 2009, Le Sommer made her first appearance for the senior national team. She came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win against the Republic of Ireland. She was chosen by coach Bruno Bini to play at UEFA Women's Euro 2009. During the tournament, Le Sommer played in all four of France's matches. France reached the quarterfinals but lost to the Netherlands in a penalty shootout. Le Sommer successfully scored her penalty shot. On September 23, 2009, she scored her third international goal against Serbia.

She played for France at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She scored one goal in the 2–1 loss to Japan in the semifinals.

Le Sommer was a key player for France at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. She scored against England on June 9, 2015, in France's 1–0 victory. She also scored two goals in France's 3–0 win over South Korea in the quarterfinal.

She also played in France's 2016 Olympic campaign. She scored two goals in the group stage. One goal was against Colombia and another against New Zealand.

On September 22, 2020, Le Sommer scored two goals in a 7–0 win against North Macedonia. This was during the Euro 2021 qualifiers. With these goals, she became France's all-time top scorer with 82 goals. She broke the previous record held by Marinette Pichon.

Le Sommer was part of the France team for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. In France's second match of the tournament, she scored the first goal against Brazil.

In July 2024, Le Sommer was selected for France's squad for the 2024 Olympics.

Personal Life

Eugénie Le Sommer married Florian Dariel on August 11, 2020. Florian works for Olympique Lyon. Their wedding took place in Brittany. This was just two days after she won the 2019–20 Coupe de France féminine. Some of her teammates, like Ada Hegerberg and Corine Franco, attended the wedding.
