Eugene Laverty (born 3 June 1986) is a former professional motorcycle road racer from Northern Ireland. He is the brother of fellow racers Michael and John.
Eugene Laverty retired from racing at the end of the 2022 season. He then became a co-owner and rider coach for the Bonovo Action BMW team. In 2021, he rode in some World Superbike Championship events. He also filled in for injured BMW factory rider Tom Sykes.
Eugene Laverty's Racing Journey
Early Years in Racing
Eugene Laverty was born in Toomebridge, Northern Ireland. In 2004, he finished second in the British 125cc Championship. By 2006, he was a top rider in the British Supersport series. He finished third overall that year, winning four races. He had previously placed ninth in his first year, 2005.
Racing in 250cc Grand Prix
In 2007, Eugene raced in the 250cc Grand Prix World Championship. He rode for the LCR Honda team. He finished 25th overall, with his best result being 14th place.
He continued in the 250cc class in 2008 with Blusens Aprilia. He earned points in races in China and Portugal.
Success in Supersport World Championship
Eugene joined the factory Yamaha team in the World Supersport series in 2008. He filled in for an injured rider. Even though he was hurt from a crash, he managed to finish on the podium. He decided to focus on World Supersport for 2009.
In 2009, he signed with the Parkalgar Honda World Supersport team. He won his first Supersport World Championship race in Qatar. He went on to win three more races and finished second overall. He was beaten only by Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow.
He continued his strong performance in 2010. He won eight races and finished second in the championship again.
Moving to Superbike World Championship
In 2011, Laverty moved up to the Superbike World Championship. He joined the factory Yamaha team. On May 8, 2011, he won his first World Superbike race at Monza. He then won the second race that same afternoon, completing a double victory.
For 2012, he rode a factory Aprilia motorcycle. He was teammates with Max Biaggi. In 2013, he had an amazing season, winning nine races and finishing second in the championship.
He rode for Suzuki in 2014, winning one race. From 2017 to 2018, he competed on an Aprilia RSV4. In 2019, he rode a Ducati Panigale for Team Go Eleven.
In 2020, he raced for the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team. In 2021, he rode for RC Squadra Corse BMW and also as a replacement for Chaz Davies. For 2022, he raced for the Bonovo Action BMW team.
Racing in MotoGP World Championship
For the 2015 season, Eugene Laverty moved to MotoGP. He joined the Aspar Team and rode a Honda. He finished 22nd in the championship. His best result was 12th place in Catalunya.
He stayed with the team for the 2016 season. He rode a Ducati motorcycle. In Argentina, he achieved his best MotoGP result, finishing in 4th place.
