Eugenio de Salazar (born around 1530) was a Spanish lawyer and writer. He made a big journey across the Atlantic in the 1500s. Salazar traveled with his wife and family in the year 1573.
Life and Work
Eugenio de Salazar was born in Madrid, Spain. His father was Pedro de Salazar, and his mother was Maria de Alarcon.
Education and Early Career
Salazar studied law at several important universities in Spain. He went to Alcalá de Henares, then Salamanca, and finally Sigüenza. He earned a special degree called a Licentiate. This degree showed he was a skilled lawyer.
Working in the New World
Salazar had an important job working for the Spanish government in its colonies. He served as the Governor of Tenerife, which is one of the Canary Islands. Later, he became a judge in the courts of Guatemala and Mexico.
In 1582, he sailed to Mexico City. Before that, he had worked for six years as an oidor in Guatemala. An oidor was a very important person who acted as both a judge and a leader.
Soon after arriving in Mexico, he became the fiscal of the Audiencia de Mexico. A fiscal was like a public prosecutor or a legal advisor. He wrote letters to the king, Philip II, about important issues of the time. These letters still exist today!
