Biography

Eulalio Ferrer started his journey at a young age. When he was just 16, he became a local leader for the Socialist Youth of Spain in his hometown of Santander. Three years later, he was the youngest Captain in the Spanish Civil War. This was a big conflict in Spain. When the war ended with the Nationalists winning, he had to leave Spain. He went to France and stayed for a while in a refugee camp called Argelès-sur-Mer. After that, he moved to Mexico, where he built a new life.

In 1987, Eulalio Ferrer helped create an important award called the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize. He gave a lot of money to make this prize possible. Four years later, he was chosen to join the Mexican Academy of Language. His first speech there was about how language is used in advertising. Thanks to Eulalio Ferrer's idea, in 1992, the Real Academia Española (the main Spanish language academy) officially recognized the verb "cantinflear". This word means "to speak in a silly or confusing way, without really saying anything important." It can also mean "to act in the same manner." The word comes from the famous Mexican comedian Cantinflas.

Besides being a member of the Mexican Academy of Language, Eulalio Ferrer was also connected to other important groups. He was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española in Spain and the North American Academy of the Spanish Language. He was also a full member of the Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística, which is a group for geography and statistics in Mexico.
