History of Eureka

Eureka started as a small community around a log schoolhouse. This school was known as Dunn's School. It was built just before the Civil War.

How Eureka Got Its Name

In 1870, the people living there wanted a post office. They had a meeting and chose the name "Eureka." This word means "I have found it!"

A post office opened that same year in the home of P. Anderson. Soon, a small town began to grow around it. By 1885, Eureka had grown quite a bit. It had mills for grinding grain and processing cotton. There were also two churches and a district school. At that time, about 25 people lived in Eureka.
