A Unique Airport: Three Countries, One Location
The EuroAirport is one of the few airports in the world shared by multiple countries. It is officially owned by both France and the Swiss canton of Basel-City. This means it has a very special setup.
It operates under a treaty signed in 1949. This agreement allows both France and Switzerland to use and manage the airport together. This makes it a truly international place.
How the Airport Works
The airport has two main runways. A runway is the long strip of land where airplanes take off and land. The longest runway is about 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) long. That's almost 4 kilometers!
Airports measure how busy they are in a few ways. They count passengers, how much cargo (freight) is moved, and how many planes take off or land.
- Passengers: In 2016, over 7.3 million people traveled through the airport.
- Freight: More than 101,000 tons of goods were moved by planes.
- Aircraft Movements: There were over 95,000 takeoffs and landings.
These numbers show that the EuroAirport is a very important place for travel and trade in Europe.
