Europa, Missouri facts for kids

Europa is a small, quiet place located in Dunklin County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and perhaps a few businesses that aren't officially part of a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county government.

Where is Europa?

You can find Europa in the southeastern part of Missouri. It sits right where two state roads, Route C and Route N, meet. This spot is about three miles (or five kilometers) southwest of a town called Senath. Another small community, Bucoda, is just two miles (about three kilometers) to the west on Route N.

A Look Back: Europa's History

Europa once had its own post office. It opened its doors in 1898, helping people send and receive mail. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long. It closed down in 1906, after serving the community for about eight years.

What's in a Name?

The name "Europa" is quite interesting! It's thought that the community might have been named after Europa, a famous princess from ancient Greek mythology. In these old stories, Europa was a beautiful princess who was carried away by the god Zeus, who had transformed himself into a bull. Many places and even a moon of Jupiter are named after her.
