The European School of Strasbourg (also known as École Européenne de Strasbourg or EES) is a public school in Strasbourg, France. It was started in 2008. This school offers a special kind of education for students from many different countries. It teaches in several languages and leads to a qualification called the European Baccalaureate. This qualification helps students go to universities all over Europe.

School History and Location

The European School of Strasbourg officially opened on September 4, 2008. Important people attended the opening, like the French Minister of Education, Xavier Darcos. The Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis, and the Mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries, were also there.

Moving to a New Campus

The school first shared a campus with another local French school. This school was called Collège Vauban. In 2015, the European School of Strasbourg moved to its own new campus. This new building was built just for the school.

Close to European Buildings

The school's new campus is in a part of Strasbourg called Robertsau. This area is very close to many important European buildings. These buildings include offices and agencies of the European Union. The main office of the Council of Europe is also nearby.

Official Status of the School

The European School of Strasbourg is a special type of school. It is called an Accredited European School. This means it is officially recognized by the Board of Governors of the European Schools. It received this status in November 2009.

European Baccalaureate Qualification

In May 2013, the school received permission to offer the European Baccalaureate program. This is a special diploma that students can earn at the end of their secondary education. It is recognized in all European Union countries.

Public School Status

EES is also recognized as a public school under French law. It has an agreement with the European Union. This agreement means the school gives priority to children of EU staff when they apply. In return, the school receives money from the EU based on how many children of EU staff are enrolled.

Learning Many Languages

Students at the European School of Strasbourg learn in different languages. They must choose to join either the English, French, or German section of the school. Most of their lessons are taught in the language of their chosen section.

Second and Third Languages

Students also need to choose a second language. This can be English, French, or German. From the third year of secondary school, subjects like History, Geography, and Ethics are taught in this second language. When students start secondary school, they are also expected to learn a third language.

Diverse Student Body

The school is a very international place. In 2019, students from 48 different countries attended the school. The teachers also came from 13 different countries. This mix of nationalities helps students learn about different cultures.
