History of Eutawville
Eutawville gets its name from a nearby place called the Eutaw Spring.
Early Settlers
In the early 1700s, a man named James Sinkler moved to America from Scotland. He settled near Bonneau, South Carolina. Later, his grandson, also named James Sinkler (1740–1800), and his wife Margaret Cantey moved to Upper St. John's Parish in 1785. Their family, including William Sinkler and his son William Henry, owned a large farm called Belvidere plantation in Eutawville.
The Battle of Eutaw Springs
Eutawville is famous for being the location of the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1781. This was an important battle during the American Revolutionary War. It was the very last major battle fought on land in the southern states during the war for American independence.
Historic Places to Visit
Today, you can visit several historic spots in the area. These include the Eutaw Springs Battleground Park, which marks the site of the famous battle. Also, Numertia Plantation and St. Julien Plantation are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important places that are protected for their history.
