Eva's Journey in Music
Early Life and Starting Out
Eva Alordiah was born on August 13, 1989, in Abuja, Nigeria. Her family is from Delta State. Her mom introduced her to music by playing songs from the 1970s and 1980s. Eva says artists like Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, and Sade Adu inspired her music.
Growing up, Eva loved art, especially drawing and reading. She sang in her church choir and joined the drama club at school. When she was 10, she wrote a short story and dreamed of becoming an author. After learning about the rapper Eminem, she started writing her own rap verses. This inspired her to become a professional rapper.
Eva loved words and rhymes, which drew her deeper into hip-hop. By age 16, she was balancing school with business. She wanted to earn her own money, so she started trying out for acting and modeling jobs. She even sold used clothes at school to make ends meet. Eva began her career as a photography model. She later earned a degree in Computer Science from Bowen University.
In 2009, Eva released her first official song, "I Dey Play." It featured Tha Suspect and was recorded over Lil Wayne's "A Milli" song.
Gigo EP and Music Growth
In January 2011, Eva was featured on Strbuttah's song "Make 'em Say." She made her first TV appearance in the music video for this song. She also appeared in the music video for the female version of Tha Suspect's song "I No Send You" in March 2011.
Eva worked on her first EP, Gigo (Garbage in Garbage Out), as an independent artist. The title "Gigo" stands for "Garbage in Garbage Out." This EP came out on November 20, 2011, and had 9 songs. It was available for free download online. The EP included popular songs like "I Done Did It," "Down Low," "Garbage Out (Your Fada)," and "High." Producers like Sossick, Tintin, and Gray Jon'z helped create the music.
"I Done Did It" was the first song released from the EP. In a 2012 interview, Eva said she enjoyed working with these producers. She released the second song, "High," in 2012. The music video for "High" was directed by Mex and came out on May 24, 2012. It was also shown on MTV Base. Eva explained that the song "High" is about overcoming life's challenges.
In May 2012, there were reports that Eva signed a deal with Da Trybe 2.0, a music label owned by eLDee. However, in November 2013, it was reported that Eva left Trybe Records. The label said her ideas didn't match their plans. Eva later said in an interview that she was never officially signed to Trybe Records. After this situation, she took a break from music to think about her art.
In February 2013, Eva worked with producer Sossick to release "Mercy," which was available on her blog. In December 2013, UK producer Drox featured her in the music video for his song "Mercy." Eva also released a song called "Lights Out" on July 29, 2013. This song was produced by Gray Jon'z, and its music video was directed by Patrick Elis. Eva said she made "Lights Out" to show her different music styles. In August 2013, Eva signed a management deal with Radioactiiv. That same month, Nokia Nigeria chose her as a judge for their "Don't Break Da Beat" competition.
Albums and New Projects
Eva started working on her first full album, 1960, in 2012. It was produced by Tintin and Gray Jon'z. On January 24, 2014, she released the first song from the album, "Deaf," produced by Gray Jon'z. The music video for "Deaf" was filmed by Patrick Elis. To promote the song, Eva held a rap competition just for girls. Eva loves creating music videos and has helped direct all of her own videos so far.
Eva was part of BBC Radio 1xtra's Live Lounge in Lagos, along with other famous artists like M.I and Wizkid. They were asked to freestyle (rap without preparation). Eva also worked with Burna Boy, Endia, Yung L, and Sarkodie on a song that was supposed to be the theme song for the TV show Shuga. However, a different song was chosen. On March 11, 2014, Eva released her version of the Shuga theme song.
On August 31, 2014, it was announced that Eva became an ambassador for Guinness Nigeria's "Made of Black" campaign, along with Olamide and Phyno. Eva performed at the campaign's launch and appeared in its TV commercial. On September 25, 2014, "War Coming" was released as the second song from her 1960 album. This song was produced by Tintin (now known as Focus Ramon) and featured Sir Dauda.
On November 6, 2014, Eva announced that her album 1960 would be released in January 2015. The album features collaborations with artists like Darey Art Alade, Femi Kuti, Yemi Alade, and Sarkodie. On November 20, 2014, Eva released her second EP, Eva, for free online. On March 6, 2015, she premiered the music video for "War Coming," directed by Mex.
